Top Tips for negotiating your salary
When you are going for a
job, an important factor is eventually to establish your salary. Obviously
you want as much as you can get and your potential employer will want
to give you the least they can get away with. You know that you are
good at what you do and that you have the skills and experiences so
how do you negotiate your salary to get what you want ??
Here are some top tips for you in order to make sure you are prepared
to negotiate and that you land yourself with a salary you deserve!

Research what salary others in your industry and job role are on and
know what the standard rates are currently. Make sure you have knowledge
about salaries so you show understanding and you know what you are
talking about.

Put a value on what you are worth and be able to sell yourself to
your potential employer and show you are worth the amount you are
negotiating for. Make a note of your skills, knowledge, achievements,
how you have developed etc and be prepared to talk about these to
show you are worth the money they are going to spend on you.

You should never be afraid to negotiate on the salary. The employer
will be impressed that you are standing up for yourself and it shows
that you can hold your ground in situations.

Don't tell them what your current/last salary was just yet. It is
better not to expose yourself at this stage as it may make you less
efficient at negotiating, especially if you are wanting a big salary
increase. They may expect to be able to offer you much less or if
it is the other way around, they may not want to interview you if
you are asking for much more than they are willing to pay. At least
if you get in the door you can show them what your are worth if this
is the case.

Don't forget benefits and other options. Sometimes these can work
out to be of more value than the salary you are negotiating. Also,
if they say a salary is their final offer, then don't be afraid to
ask for these additional extras. Think about perks such as holidays,
laptop, car, health cover, bonuses etc

Go into an interview knowing what your absolute limit is so you do
not accept a job with a salary you cannot even live off.

Don't forget that money is NOT everything - don't just go for a really
high paid job without thinking about the enjoyment aspect and the
satisfaction you will get out of it. Ultimately, this is more important
as you will be spending most of you day at work!

Don't rush into accepting an offer straight away, especially if the
offer is not as high as you hoped. You may find that not accepting
straight away means they will come back to you with a slightly higher
offer the following day. It also allows you to think about it in more
depth and reassures you that you are happy with it.
